How I'm Thinking About A.I.
Like many of you, I’ve been fascinated by the A.I. wave which continues to simultaneously amaze me while deeply challenging my previous understanding of uniquely human capabilities on a seemingly weekly basis.
Whether it’s writing, music, art, math, or complex coding, it’s a humbling feeling to see computers do things I never imagined possible. And yet, I kind of love it.
Some of my earliest memories with computers involve huddling around an old Macintosh in the corner of my parents’ office, playing pixelated games with my brother like Shufflepuck Café or Prince of Persia. I recall the excitement using a tool whose purpose could be both a productive force or endlessly entertaining, all depending on my mood.
There’s no hesitation in my mind that A.I. capabilities will only continue to compound–unlocking untapped value for all of humanity. Deep scientific research assisted by A.I. is already showing Nobel Prize-winning results. Which beckons the question I’ve been–and I assume many others–are wrestling with and pondering deeply, “What’s my role in all this?”
The best answer I have for now when speaking to friends and family is that tools alone aren’t enough. Like a brush with no artist, A.I. tools in their current form need human input, creativity, curiosity, and ingenuity to achieve desired outcomes. Where I’m finding and adding my personal value is by rekindling those feelings of joy and amazement from my earliest computer memories, huddled around the screen, wondering what happens next.
There’s beauty to “organic play” and curiosity without expectation that–to me, is one of the defining traits distinguishing human capabilities from A.I. today. Will this always be true? Time will tell. What I can say for certain is that my imagination has been deeply touched by this current wave of technological breakthroughs and I have no intention of sitting on the sidelines watching it pass me by. The time for play is now and the sandbox has never been bigger.
